My name is Tim. I’m one of the chaplains here at Severn Hospice, and I’ve worked here for 17 years this year, and I love it, it’s a great place to work. As a chaplain, I’m here for all kinds of reasons. Obviously, people come here for physical care, but they also receive spiritual care, which is just about caring for patients as a whole. We find out what’s important to patients, and for some people, that might be a faith, but for other people that might not be, but they still need spiritual care. Our spirituality is about what’s important to us. Last summer, one Friday afternoon, I was asked to visit a patient who learned that I rode a motorbike, and he wanted to talk to me about that. So we sat and chatted for quite a while about that. And then there were other things, deeper things that he wanted to talk about, too. Then I suggested that he might like to see my motorbike if I rode it round and he could look at it outside through his patio doors. He said he would love that. So I arranged with the nurses to unlock gates and doors so that I could get around. And then as I got around to his room, because he was stuck in bed, I realised that he still couldn’t really see the bike. So I took an instant decision to ride the bike straight into his room, and stopped it about an inch from his bed. We sat and chatted for a long time, while he reminisced about his days of working on bikes and riding bikes, and it did him so much good. And then as I rode off, the nurse that was in the room with us told me that he just lay back in his bed and went, “Oh, wow, oh, wow, oh, wow”. And it really made his day. When I came back into work the following Monday, I learned that, sadly, he’d passed away that Saturday morning, and I was so glad that I was able to do that special thing for him and gave him really good spiritual care and make a lasting memory as well. And for me, that’s what hospice care is all about.
