Hi, my name is Derek Willis, and it’s my real pleasure to be Medical Director of Severn Hospice. A lot of the time, people ask me, “Why do I work within a hospice?” And “it must be a really depressing place to work”. And when people ask me this, I think of the story I’m about to tell you. We had a lady who came to the ward who had pain from a cancer that was in her head. And I asked her if we could make things better for her, what would she want to do? This lady loved ballroom dancing, and she wanted to be able to waltz again, but the pain she had meant that she was unable to waltz. Through the time she spent with us on the ward and the medicines we gave her, she started to feel better, and her pain had gone. She reminded me that I promised that she would be able to waltz. So I took her hand and we danced down the corridor together. So when people ask me, that’s why I answer, that’s what Severn Hospice care is to me.
